Fewer K-8 students in NYC are obese, report finds

The obesity rate among kindergarten to eighth-grade students in New York City fell from 21.9% in 2006-07 to 20.7% in 2010-11 -- a 5.5% decline. While the city adopted programs, during that time, aimed at decreasing the rate of childhood obesity, the authors of the report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, do not link the interventions to the decline. Instead, they say, "the trend toward reduced prevalence of obesity is encouraging."
