Americans do not get enough dietary fiber to reach the daily recommended 25-plus grams, and that can cause constipation, says Dr. Victor Sierpina at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He says psyllium and ground flaxseed are good sources of fiber, while Milk of Magnesia, prune juice and extra water consumption can also help keep bowels healthy.
