Researcher says engineered avian influenza virus isn't lethal

The airborne version of highly pathogenic avian influenza strain H5N1 engineered at the University of Wisconsin at Madison is not fatal and can be treated by currently available medicines, said Yoshihiro Kawaoka, professor of virology and the study's lead researcher. Kawaoka halted his research following an agreement reached with federal officials over bioterrorism concerns related to the altered virus, but he argues that more research is urgently needed.
