U.S. announces overhaul of school nutrition program

The U.S. government today will launch the first major overhaul of the school nutrition program in 15 years, calling on schools to reduce calories and sodium, add whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and serve low-fat milk in student meals. Some changes could take place as early as the next school year. "These are all goals school nutrition professionals have been working toward, and these national nutrition standards will ensure that every student has access to a healthy meal in the cafeteria," said Diane Pratt-Heavner of the School Nutrition Association.
