The Rhode Island House yesterday voted 51 to 19 to pass a marriage equality bill that would make the state the last in New England to allow same-sex couples to wed. "Today is a great day. Today ... we stand for equality, we stand for justice," said openly gay House Speaker Gordon Fox, who presided over the debate. The bill is supported by Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an Independent, but faces a steeper climb in the state Senate, where the Democratic Senate president opposes marriage equality.
