Shamed for speaking English

The French, always en garde of their mother tongue, are giving an annual award for "fawning servility" to the relentless intrusion of English. This year's runners-up include the Carrefour supermarket chain, for naming its stores "Carrefour Market," and a Paris band that sings in English because, says the frontman, French won't rock. But the prize for biggest English doormat goes to France's higher education minister, for admitting that she would speak English at international meetings because it is the obvious lingua franca.
