DuPont, Ashland record significant Q4 results, preview economic growth

DuPont has reported a fourth-quarter profit of $441 million, compared with a loss of $629 million the year before, as emerging markets boosted sales. Ashland recorded an $86 million fiscal first-quarter profit, up from a $119 million loss during the same period in 2008, on aggressive cost reductions as well as earnings from its Hercules acquisition. The results from both chemical majors exceeded analyst expectations and provided hints of an improving economy, as demand for their products showed an overall increase in the desire for consumer products.
