Cattlemen are wary of federal ID plan that would replace branding

Cattle ranchers are reluctant to embrace the government's planned national animal ID system, which would replace branding with numbered ear tags. Cattlemen say that branding, a long-standing tradition, is the easiest method for identifying cattle. The government says the new system would better allow officials to easily trace the source of disease outbreaks.
