Most young Americans see barriers in pursuing STEM-related careers

Sixty percent of surveyed Americans aged 16 to 25 indicate there are factors that keep them from pursuing science, technology and engineering jobs, according to a survey from Lemelson-MIT. Young people see barriers to entering these professions, including their lack of preparation for pursuing the fields and the increasing difficulty of doing so. "[W]e found there's a real lack of knowledge in STEM education and the things that motivate young people to go into it," said Joshua Schuler, executive director of the Lemelson-MIT Program.
