An organic ice melt product is gaining traction in some areas as it melts snow better than road salt, without causing rust on equipment or creating as much landscape damage, according to this article. Eric Hitzfield, who sells the product after testing it as a snow plower, said it can work in minus 35 degrees temperatures. While it should be used sparingly to help avoid plant damage, the organic compounds in the product work as a fertilizer, Rosa Salter Rodriguez writes.
