Will civil unions become the law in Hawaii?

A measure that would create a civil-union system in Hawaii could become law this year, according to this article. The proposal, which died in a House committee two years ago, would confer to partners in civil unions the same rights, benefits and protections as their married counterparts, and also offer legal backing to marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships from other states. Proponents of the bill say a majority in the state's House backs the measure.
