Scientists with the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a new LiDAR-like system that can determine depth based on a single photon from a location. Existing rangefinders measure depth by giving off a laser light and evaluating the time it takes for photons to arrive back to the equipment, but they need about 100 times as many photons to gauge depth. Thus, the new development might save time and costs, according to this article.
