State controller urges end to grocery strike

Amid concern about Safeway's top executives earning millions of dollars in stock grants, California State Controller Steve Westly asked the supermarket chain to end the current labor strike. Westly is on the board of two of Safeway's largest shareholders, CalPERS and CalSTRS, and he believes the grocer should back off its proposal to cut employee health benefits. Safeway says it is trying to offer quality benefits while staying competitive in the supermarket industry.
