Affluent parents often motivate their children to do well in school using allowances as well as verbal support, writes Baltimore schools math tutor Michele Shropshire, so why should a proposal to encourage low-income students using cash as an incentive be dismissed by some as outlandish? Tangible rewards could help such students focus on the importance of doing well.
