Speech recognition makes giant leaps toward market

Several companies are competing for their share of the profitable $1.6 billion speech-recognition market. Startups Yap and Vlingo each offer speech-based programs that let users send text messages, request songs and ask GPS systems for directions. AT&T and Sprint Nextel are both participating in beta testing of Vlingo's Find application.
