Blots on criminal record complicate job search

Past convictions turned up by background checks on prospective employees are not grounds for refusing to hire them in New York. However, it's an employment-at-will state and employers are not required to give a reason for no-hire decisions. Employers are not likely to provide an explanation, and disappointed job seekers are even less likely to pursue the matter.
