Experts: Health IT legislation must balance privacy, benefits

Lawmakers must enact privacy safeguards as part of an expansion of electronic health records and a push for wider use of health IT, experts said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday. Deven McGraw, of the Health Privacy Project, said health IT provisions in the economic-stimulus bill are a great opportunity to improve care quality, but building the public's trust will be central to the success of such efforts.
