Unfettered by hedging, Allegiant posts full-year profit

Allegiant Air continues to carve a profitable niche for itself, as lower oil prices and a lack of hedging contracts helped boost 2008 earnings 12.4%, to $35.4 million. In the fourth quarter alone, profits soared nearly 400%. The carrier's average fare rose $5, while average expenses fell $9. The company plans to add new planes to its fleet of 38 MD-80s this year.
