Eco-labels are popular with consumers and awarded by myriad organizations, but manufacturers argue that they can be too narrow in focus and confusing to consumers. Sustainability can be demonstrated even if a label isn't present, says Kate Geraghty of Dow Chemical. "In addition to lower hazards, substances should be chosen that result in lower energy, water, and waste footprints," Geraghty said.
