New GPS-based SAR system is tested in Alaska

A new search-and-rescue program that utilizes GPS tracking devices is being tested in Alaska. In an emergency, the Enhanced Special Reporting Service sends an alert to Alaska Flight Services that includes the location of the aircraft in distress, eliminating the need for SAR crews to search the entire flight path.
