Startup insurance company offers health coverage for freelancers

Sara Horowitz understands the life of a freelancer from personal experience -- she was classified as an independent contractor when she took a job at a law firm. "I started realizing there was this whole new way that workers were being treated," she said. As a result, she started the Freelancers Union in 2003 and the Freelancers Insurance Co. in 2008. The insurance company has been profitable since its second year in operation and has grown to serve almost 25,000 New Yorkers.
