Makers of synthetic windpipes envision man-made organs of all types

Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology is producing synthetic tracheas using a patient's stem cells on a lab-made scaffold, and the technology could lead the way for the development of other synthetic organs, including heart valves and kidneys. More than 120,000 people are awaiting organ transplants. "The only way we are going to meet that real need is to manufacture living organs," said Joseph Vacanti of Massachusetts General Hospital.
