California experiments with early screening for college preparedness

Beginning this fall, high school juniors in California taking the mandated state assessment can also take an optional placement test to determine their readiness for college-level work. The early assessment, the first of its kind in the country, will enable college-bound students to use their senior year to strengthen their math and English proficiency.
