GAO: FDA inspections of foreign companies fail to meet standards

The FDA has failed to conduct regular inspections of facilities owned by foreign medical-device firms, drugmakers and food companies in the U.S. because it is short on manpower and resources, according to Government Accountability Office reports that will be presented today before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. An FDA spokeswoman said the agency will cooperate with authorities on the issue, reserving further comments on the GAO testimony until the House hearing.
