Despite the booming sector of high-end chain hotels, independent upscale properties continue to thrive and attract loyal followings in some cities. Downtown hotel landmarks, such as The Rittenhouse in Philadelphia and The Hay-Adams in Washington, D.C., are able to hold their own against big chains thanks to grand architecture, historical character and extremely personalized service.
