Asian shares gain but come off highs as concerns remain

The overnight increase on Wall Street helped lift shares throughout Asia on Thursday, but investors' concerns about the global downturn took markets off their early highs. Japan's Nikkei 225 Average gained 0.8%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.6% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index soared 5.4% after a three-day holiday. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8%, Singapore's Straights Times Index inched up 0.1% and Malaysia's main index gained 0.7%.
