Overcoming social media's productivity paradox

While much has been said about all the opportunities wikis, social networking and other Web 2.0 applications open up for businesses, many managers in companies large and small still view them as time wasters instead of productivity boosters. But as Matthew Fraser and Soumitra Dutta of INSEAD point out, the real value of new Web 2.0 technologies is that they allow the knowledge that exists throughout a company to be utilized by breaking it out of institutional "silos" and unnecessary hierarchy. The key for managers looking to use Web 2.0 resources in their office, Farsier and Dutta argue, is fostering a culture of openness and not overreacting to criticism when it emerges.
