Heavier trucks pose risks to infrastructure and safety, opponents say

Damage to road and bridge infrastructure as well as risks to public safety are among the reasons that Congress should not permit heavier trucks on federal highways, according to critics of the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act. "As you finalize your surface transportation reauthorization legislation, I ask you to not include any provision allowing larger and heavier trucks on our highways," wrote Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., in a letter addressed to House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Fla.
