Experts give advice on how to boost awareness about contrast agents

Patients have concerns about the use of contrast agents in their tests, and it is the task of radiologists to help them understand the reasons behind and procedures involved with the use of the agents, experts say. Patient discussions about the benefits and risks of contrast agents before use are very important, said Dr. Lawrence Marks from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Exploring all non-contrast options is best, said Dr. Jeffrey Kanne from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, but if it is absolutely necessary to use contrast agents, patients should repeat the information given them back to the radiologist to show they really understand.
