Less than half of self-harming youths get ED mental assessment

Only 39% of youths ages 10 to 19 who were discharged after deliberately harming themselves received a mental health assessment while in the emergency department, according to a study in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Researchers noted that most self-harming youths were discharged from the emergency department to the community as opposed to inpatient care.
