L.A. officials to restaurants: Volunteer to phase out trans fats

After learning that they don't have legal authority to ban trans fats in restaurants, L.A. City and council leaders reached an agreement Tuesday with the local chapter of the California Restaurant Association to voluntarily phase out the artery-clogging substance within 18 months. However, the association only represents a few thousand out of more than 34,000 restaurants in the county, so it's unclear how many additional eateries will join the effort to eliminate trans fats.
