Depositor safeguards could cost UK banks £3bn a year

Changes proposed to Britain's banking rules include a plan to better protect depositors by forcing banks to pay into an emergency fund. Investment bank UBS estimates the pre-funding will cost UK banks up to £3 billion a year for several years. Deposit protection is considered vital to preventing a bank run by depositors, as happened in September to lender Northern Rock.
