Can school newspapers run negative articles about teachers?

A Nevada teachers union has criticized a Churchill County school's decision to allow a student newspaper to print an article critical of one of its teachers. The school's principal and the district's superintendent decided blocking the article would have violated First Amendment rights. However, union officials say student newspapers operate under different standards than professional newspapers.
