Science teaching method involves hands-on projects, debate

An award-winning Iowa teacher uses a method called "science writing heuristics" to help her fifth-graders understand science through hands-on projects and debate rather than textbooks. Michelle Harris introduces a topic, and her students ask questions to indicate what they want to know. Their questions are the basis for hands-on experiments completed in class. "Michelle has realized that through inquiry, kids do get the necessary content, but in a much more critical thinking kind of way," said a science consultant for the Loess Hills Area Education Agency.
