Why CFOs really do make good CEOs

Boards of directors need not look far when hiring a CEO, research suggests. Picking the CFO or another internal candidate to move up to the top job results in significantly better performance than hiring a CEO from outside the organization, the study found. "Inside CEOs, because of their deeper roots in the firm, have a better understanding of the firm's core competencies and key weaknesses," said Rice University professor Anthea Zhang.
