December data suggest consumers put extra income into savings

The personal savings rate in the U.S. rose to 4% in December, up a half percentage point -- the largest gain since April 2010, according to Credit Suisse economists. Personal income also increased by 0.5% in December, suggesting that Americans directed their extra income toward savings. Consumer spending remained flat in December.
