Nostalgia, value drive popular comfort-food combos

More upscale Washington, D.C.-area eateries are offering gourmet versions of soup and sandwich combos, a comfort food pairing that both evokes nostalgia and appeals to budget-conscious consumers. Fiola chef-owner Fabio Trabocchi's pappa al pomodoro with buffalo mozzarella toast is a new take on the classic combo of grilled cheese and tomato soup and, at $14, it's the least pricey thing on the menu.
