Congressional hearing to focus on illegal sale of phone records

A House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing scheduled for today will focus on how to prevent companies such as All Star Investigations from illegally obtaining and selling data on phone customers. Among the issues up for discussion are whether there should be additional federal laws aimed directly at the online data brokers that are already illegally obtaining, possessing, and marketing customers' private call records, why there has been virtually no enforcement of existing criminal statutes, and what steps wireless carriers are currently taking to try and thwart the effort of the information thieves. CTIA-The Wireless Association President and CEO Steve Largent is scheduled to testify at the hearing.
