Delay in Sanofi's Acomplia helps other drugmakers

Sanofi-Aventis had hoped the weight-loss drug Acomplia would win FDA approval in 2006, but an FDA delay until April has opened the door for other drugmakers to produce their own similar drugs. Merck is expected to seek approval of its version next year, while Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb are testing pills that work like Acomplia by blocking hunger signals in the brain.
