Apple's chip design defies industry norms

The most revolutionary aspect of Apple's forthcoming iPad tablet may be the A4, a chip that Apple designed itself rather than farming it out as is typical for the industry. While some chip industry analysts have not been overly impressed, the A4 is a first for Apple, which purchased PA Semi in 2008. "This is somewhere where Apple thinks it can make a unique product, and it definitely signals a new direction for them," said Insight 64 analyst Nathan Brookwood.
