Why did Warren Buffett buy Burlington Northern Santa Fe when Union Pacific was right next door? Both companies have rich prospects, say analysts, but Buffett might have been looking at cash flow and capital investment. BNSF had $1 billion in free cash flow last year, while UP had $850 million. Meanwhile, BNSF has made massive investments in its Chicago-to-Southern California line.
