Milk producer-distributors may have to share subsidy costs with other processors

Milk producer-distributors, who are exempt from certain competitive pricing rules faced by other dairy farmers, are under fire in Congress, where new legislation may force them to start participating in a federal subsidy program like other processors. These producers are of "critical concern" to the industry, according to the International Dairy Foods Association and other groups, because their emergence could lead to unstable milk prices.
