Key Democrats still support Daschle for HHS secretary

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., and other Democratic members of the group are backing former Sen. Tom Daschle as HHS secretary despite tax problems that raised concerns about his nomination. Daschle said he had paid more than $140,000 in back taxes and interest, and he apologized for the shortfall, which he called "completely inadvertent." Baucus said Daschle's tax errors were unfortunate, but they "do not change his qualifications to lead on health care reform."
