Mortgage REITs, recently avoided, return to favor

Mortgage REITs are starting to regain favor with investors. The sector was the first to come unraveled, but now some investors suspect they may have hit a bottom. "The agency mortgage REITs are one of the few areas of the financial space that I would feel comfortable investing in, largely because of the low-credit-risk exposure [associated with] holding Fannie and Freddie agency [mortgage-backed securities]," said James Arnold, an analyst in the San Francisco office of RBC Capital Markets Corp.
