ACS surgery risk calculators are too costly for small hospitals

The American College of Surgeons has new calculators that evaluate an individual patient's risks of complications and death from surgery, but so far access to the tools is limited to about 250 hospitals. The $35,000 annual usage fee is an obstacle for many hospitals, and the college is working on a pilot to offer a lower-cost program to smaller and rural facilities.
