Inclusive classroom provides support for student with autism

A Wisconsin second-grader who has autism has found acceptance in an inclusive classroom environment, say his mother and his teachers. Tanner Ianni, who is largely nonverbal, was moved from a separate special-education setting into a mainstream classroom as part of a districtwide effort toward inclusion beginning with students in kindergarten through second grade in Racine, Wis. "It prepares them for their future," Tanner's teacher said. "They have an authentic experience that ... being different doesn't have to be something negative."
