Pa. district's evening programs seek to build character in 4th-, 5th-graders

The Lebanon School District in Pennsylvania holds annual districtwide boys' and girls' nights out to help fourth- and fifth-graders build character and make friends from other schools. At a recent Boys Night Out, boys and their fathers, teachers or other adult male mentors participated in karate demonstrations and challenges with local football players -- all aimed at an underlying character-building concept. "The theme of the evening is courage, confidence and discipline," said guidance counselor Jamie Walton, who operates the event without a budget and with volunteers.
