Study: Type 2 diabetes risk factors seen in teens

A study of 1,740 eighth-graders at 12 schools around the U.S. found that the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes among children as young as 13 are common. Type 2 diabetes typically is associated with older adults, but half of the children involved in the study were overweight or close to becoming overweight, and 41% had elevated blood sugar levels when tests were taken after fasting, a sign that the body is becoming resistant to insulin.
