Politically popular ethanol as oil substitute still has doubters

Ethanol may be a favorite in U.S. political circles, but some energy experts still question whether the biofuel can be relied on to play a large role in energy consumption in a system currently tailored to gasoline. Some critics doubt the ethanol industry can be self-sustaining without government subsidies and question the environmental consequences of producing ethanol.
