Ballots are cast in advisory vote on control of Los Angeles schools

Parents, teachers, students and members of the community cast ballots in a nonbinding election to provide input on which groups should control 30 Los Angeles schools. Groups of teachers, charter-school operators, nonprofits -- including one run by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa -- and other outside groups are among those bidding for control of the schools. The school board will be making the final decisions. "This is our opportunity to hear directly from the people who will most be affected by the decisions that we ... will make in just a few weeks," one board member said.
